What's the Honey Bee Done for You Lately?

There is a lot of talk in the news these days about the plight of the Honey Bee. Nationwide, on average, 40 percent of the honeybee colonies die each year. Indiana had about 40 percent 'die off' last year down from a chilling 65 percent in the previous year. This die-off has a variety of sometimes interacting causes, including diseases, parasites, loss of forage, pesticides (herbicides, fungicides and insecticides) and last but not least, being moved about the country to provide pollination services. The life for the honeybee has been tough for the past five thousand years or so, but the hand of a man has increasingly impacted the life of the honeybee in both good and bad ways.
