Assessor discusses important tax information

Sunday, March 24, 2019

The Greene County Assessor’s office would like to provide a few important notices to taxpayers.

In lieu of the Notice of Assessment of Land and Improvements (Form 11), the 18 pay 19 tax bill will serve as Notice of Assessment for 18 pay 19 property values. If a taxpayer believes there is an error in their assessment, they may file an appeal using the Taxpayer’s Notice to Initiate an Appeal (Form 130). Please note that the deadline to file an appeal for 18 pay 19 property values is June 15, 2019. Form 130 can be obtained in the Greene County Assessor’s office or by visiting https://www.in.gov/dlgf/8516.htm.

The filing of Business Personal Property Returns has begun for 2019. The assessment date of Business Personal Property Returns is January 1, 2019 and must be filed by May 15, 2019. Failure to file by this deadline will result in a $25 late fee and an additional 20 percent penalty will be added to the taxes if the forms are not filed within 30 days of the due date.

Business Personal Property is a self-assessment system. All business owners, churches, not-for-profits, and farmers are responsible for reporting all tangible personal property that is used in their trade or business, used for the production of income, or held as an investment that should be or is subject to depreciation for federal income tax purposes. This holds true even if an entity is exempt from property taxes.

A business that holds and/or operates equipment with a total acquisition cost under $20,000 may qualify for an exemption on the tangible business personal property equipment.

Failure to file on an exempt property will result in fees and penalties and could possibly result in losing the exemption.

If your business closed last year, the forms must still be filed stating as such and that there is nothing to report. This also allows the Assessor’s Office to close out the personal property file.

Forms 102 Farm, 103 Short, 103 Long and 104 can all be obtained in the Greene County Assessor’s office or by visiting https://www.in.gov/dlgf/8516.htm. If you need assistance filing a return, the staff in the Assessor’s office can assist you.

Please call the Greene County Assessor’s office at 812-384-2002 if you have any questions regarding your Notice of Assessment or filing a Business Personal Property Return.
