Northview struggled to find the big hit for much of the evening in its home softball opener against Linton on Thursday evening. However, when they needed it most, the Knights struck pay dirt to come away with a 3-2 victory over the Miners.

With the game tied at 1-apiece in the sixth inning as a steady drizzle began to fall, both teams took advantage of the other’s defensive miscues to play add on.

The Miners gained the go-ahead run in the top of the frame as Hannah Frady reached via a walk and was sacrificed to second by Erica Barker. With two outs in the inning, Northview pitcher Ellie Jackman struck out Aubrey Walton, but the third strike was dropped. Walton raced towards first base and the throw was high and skipped into right field as Frady scored from third base for a 2-1 Miners’ lead.

In the Knights’ half of the sixth inning, Halle Ellis lead off with a single to left field before giving way to pinch runner Danielle White. Olyvia Notter would reach on an error, but White was erased in a run down for the first out of the inning. Miner pitcher Peyton Bland would get the second out on a ground out to bring Rylee Richey to the plate.

Richey would come through in the clutch by smacking a run scoring double into center field to score Notter. Hayden Smith would step to the plate and serve a short fly ball into left field that was dropped as Richey came around to score the eventual game-winning run.

Jackman, who would allow just one hit in the game while striking out eight overall, would work around a two-out walk to strike out the game’s final batter.

Northview had plenty of base runners and scoring chances in the game with nine hits in the contest.

The Knights struck first with a first inning run as Ellie Carter reached on a single and moved to second on an error. Jackman would come through with an RBI base hit for a 1-0 lead

Linton came right back in its half of the second inning as Walton walked and moved to second on a passed ball. She would eventually score on a wild pitch to tie the game.

The Knights would get a pair of singles in the third inning, one each from Haley Richey and Madelyn Richey. However both were stranded. The same could be said of the fourth inning as Ellis and Timberman had base hits, but were left on base.

Offensively, Haley Richey and Halle Ellis each had two hits as Northview improved to 2-0 overall. The Knights open action in the Braves Bash at the Miss Softball America Complex in Terre Haute against Casey-Westfield at 8 p.m.
