Baseball Cardinals drop first two

Thursday, April 4, 2019

The Bloomfield Cardinals baseball squad has gotten off to a rocky start so far. Bloomfield lost its season opener at home Tuesday, 6-0 to Owen Valley and saw an 8-5 lead in the seventh inning slip away in a 9-8 loss at Mitchell Wednesday.

Owen Valley led 5-0 after three innings after a three-run second frame. A single, four walks and a hit batsman accounted for the Patriots’ three runs.

Cody Hanson went 2-for-3 at the plate, accounting for Bloomfield’s only hits.

At Mitchell the Cards squandered an 8-5 lead on three walks, a dropped third strike and two errors in the seventh inning.

Bloomfield put up three runs in the third on an error, a bunt and base hits by Oscar Pegg and Hanson.

Ethan Dean, Oscar Pegg and Dakota Brown all drove in runs with base hits in the Cardinals’ four-run fourth.

Brown, Pegg and Jacob Barber all had multi-hit games. Barber was 3-for-5 with a double; Pegg went 2-for-4 and also doubled; and Brown had a 3-for-4 night.

The Cards pounded out 13 hits. But the two errors in the bottom of the seventh were costly. Mitchell managed just three hits against Cardinal pitching but drew 12 walks.
