Monday’s IHSAA boys golf sectional at Phil Harris Golf Course wasn’t a complete shutout for Greene County’s five high school golf teams. Eastern Greene linkster Devin Moss made sure of that.

Although none of the five teams will advance to Thursday’s regional, Moss will.

The Thunderbird senior turned in a fine round of 76, second among the three qualifying individuals not on an advancing team. Moss will be teeing it up Thursday in the Washington Regional at Country Oaks Golf Club near Montgomery.

“I’m exhilarated,” Eastern’s No. 1 golfer said. “I’m actually surprised I made it through here. I haven’t been playing too well lately. But it seems like this round went pretty well for me.”

When asked what part of his game was working for him, Moss replied, “Honestly I think it was my putting. The greens were rolling fine and I got my putts on line pretty well.”

Moss went out in 39, then bogeyed the first two holes on the back nine. He responded with a birdie at the par-5 12th, then played the last six holes in even par.

“I’m pretty pleased with the way I played,” he said. “I could have saved par on a few shots but overall I feel like I did pretty well.”

Moss’ 76 tied for third overall individually with Terre Haute North golfer Andrew Granda. Granda was awarded third place based on a reverse-order playoff on the scorecard. Granda birdied the 18th hole and Moss parred it.

The Northview Knights edged the Terre Haute North Patriots by four strokes, 315-319 to claim the team championship. Terre Haute South finished third with a team score of 335. West Vigo was 11 back of South in fourth.

Three golfers broke 80 for the winning Knights. Ben Goshen fired a 74 to claim medalist honors. Collier Fredrick posted 78 and Chase Nuckols carded 79.

The top three teams and the top three individuals not on an advancing team qualify for the regional.

Clay City’s Justin Hopkins was the low individual qualifier. The two-time Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference champion shot 75. West Vigo’s Alex Baker (78) will join Hopkins and Moss at Country Oaks.

For the SWIAC team champion Linton Miners Monday’s sectional was a complete reversal of fortunes from the conference tournament three weeks ago on the same course.

On a chilly, rainy day Linton won the SWIAC in a runaway besting Eastern Greene by 24 strokes, 362-386. But in near-perfect weather and playing conditions Monday – warm, sunny and dry – the Miners didn’t fare nearly as well while their conference foes fared better.

The sectional hosts were 12 shots off their conference-winning pace and placed eighth in the 11-team field. The Clay City Eels were 30 strokes better collectively, finishing in a tie for fifth in the team standings with Sullivan at 361. The Thunderbirds were two shots behind the Eels in seventh.

Shakamak improved its conference showing by 18 strokes, edging Bloomfield 402-404 for ninth. White River Valley (456) finished well back of the others.

Tee times for the regional at Country Oaks begin at 8:30 a.m. Thursday for the first wave of golfers.

And Devin Moss is looking forward to his first regional experience.

“I haven’t played there (at Country Oaks) yet. But it’s going to be a pretty fun time I think.”
