2020 Census: Self-response invites in the mail soon

Tuesday, March 10, 2020

Invitations will start going out this week for residents to self-report for the 2020 Census.

Greene County Complete Count Committee (CCC) met recently, reporting the first round of invitations will be sent through the mail between March 12-20.

US Census Bureau Partnership Specialist Jill Bond said on March 12, the website will go live where residents can enter their household’s census data on a secure website.

The instructions will direct households to visit my2020census.gov to respond online starting March 12.

“We hope people will use their Census ID included in their invitation, but it’s not required. It makes things easier for the Census Bureau however, you can type in your address,” Bond explained.

A reminder letter will be sent out between March 16-24 and a postcard to remind residents is scheduled for March 26-April 3.

Those who have not responded by early April will receive a follow-up reminder letter and a paper questionnaire between April 8-16.

The Census Bureau will not email or text people for the 2020 Census.

At an earlier meeting of the CCC, Chairperson Roger Axe reminded residents of the importance of responding to the census.

“We get money based on our census count. The less (population) you have, the less you get. The more you have, the more you get,” Axe explained previously.

“Greene County, being as it is in a depressed economic area, we can’t afford to lose any money. Just to give an example of the importance, from 1980 to 1990, we only grew four people in the census. We are dealing and fighting against New York and California for those dollars.”
