Linton dismantles Bloomfield to claim SWIAC, County Keg
The No. 1 Lady Miners played their final county foe for the season in the Cardinals of Bloomfield Thursday night and ran away to a 69-27 win. The victory completes a sweep for Linton against SWIAC and county opponents as games set for next week with White River Valley and Eastern Greene were cancelled due to virus issues in their programs.
The win makes it four straight years where Linton won SWIAC and the County Keg. The Miners have now won four-straight in the series with the Cardinals as the five seniors on Linton in Aubrey Burgess, Vanessa Shafford, Haley Rose, Lydia McCammon, and Abby Brownfield will graduate with an undefeated record against their county rival and an undefeated mark in conference at 26-0.
“It says a lot about them to be able to bring it night in and night out for four years. Shows their resiliency and their attitude and their will to win,” Linton coach Jared Rehmel said. “This group is going to be talked about for a long time. It’s not easy to win and to be able to do it 26 straight times in the conference; it does not get any better than that.”
The Miners got out to a 12-4 lead with their pressure defense forcing turnovers. Bloomfield did not have the guards to combat the press as Linton led 39-19 at the half.
Burgess would score five straight points to start the half to increase the lead to 44-19. Linton led 49-21 going towards the fourth as junior Jaylee Hayes connected on two 3-pointers to put Linton up 60-25.
Burgess finished with a game-high 16 points. Three other Miners were in double figures in Haley Rose (14), Vanessa Shafford (11) and Jaylee Hayes (11).
Kylee Shelton led Bloomfield with 11 points.
Linton hit 14 shots from beyond the arc while Bloomfield had just one 3-pointer the whole game.
Linton improves to 18-1 and will play Brown County Friday at home followed by a quick trip to Loogootee Saturday. The schedule for the Miners is tricky with three games in three days but Rehmel wanted to get another home game in. Bloomfield falls to 9-7 and will travel to South Knox Saturday.
“Our girls want to play and the best thing for us is playing, Lets give us as much adversity as we can and see how we handle it,” Rehmel said.
