Bloomfield baseball wins first conference game of season
The Bloomfield baseball team is 2-2 on the year after falling 4-3 to Owen Valley on Friday, Apr. 12 before defeating conference foe Linton 10-5 on Saturday.
After hosting Brown County on Monday, the Cardinals will travel to South Knox on Tuesday before hosting North Daviess on Wednesday.
Against Owen Valley, the Cardinals were up 3-2 in the top of the seventh before a homer gave Owen Valley the late lead.
Bloomfield tied the game at 1 in the bottom of the first with a ground out from senior Boone Holtsclaw that scored junior Dillon Warnick.
The Cardinals took a lead in the bottom of the third with a single from Holtsclaw that scored Warnick to go up 2-1.
Owen Valley tied the game in the top of the fourth with a home run before sophomore Chase Wiles scored a home run to right field to give the Cardinals a 3-2 lead.
After Owen Valley took a 4-3 lead, the Cardinals went three up, three down in the bottom of the seventh to fall 4-3.
Holtsclaw had one hit and one RBI while Wiles had one hit and one RBI as well.
Sophomore Laytin Graf had one hit while sophomore Will Dowden had one hit as well.
On the mound, Warnick pitched six innings, giving up two runs on six hits, striking out three.
Senior Braxton Clark pitched one inning, striking out one and giving up two runs on one hit in the loss.
Against Linton, the Miners took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second before Wiles hit another home run to right field to tie the game in the bottom of the second.
The Miners homered in the top of the third, taking a 3-1 lead.
Clark hit a three run home run in the bottom of the third, scoring Warnick and Holtsclaw to take a 4-3 lead.
The Miners responded, taking a 5-4 lead in the top of the fourth before the Cardinals scored six runs unanswered.
In the bottom of the fourth, Dowden singled on a bunt to score freshman Tyler Patterson before a single from Holtsclaw scored Dowden and sophomore Andrew Barker to take a 7-5 lead.
A single from Wiles scored Warnick for an 8-5 lead heading into the fifth inning.
The Cardinals extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth, with a single from Warnick scoring Patterson and junior Ethan Davis on an error.
With Clark on the mound, the senior forced three straight strikeouts to close the top of the sixth before ending the top of the seventh with two strikeouts in the 10-5 Cardinal victory.
Wiles and Patterson each had two hits, while Wiles had two RBIs.
Clark, Holtsclaw, Warnick and Dowden each had a hit, while Clark had three RBIs, Holtsclaw had two and Warnick and Dowden each had one RBI.
Holtsclaw was the winning pitcher, giving up five runs on five hits, striking out six.
Clark added five strikeouts in two innings, not giving up any hits or runs.
The Cardinals play three of their four games this week at home, against Brown County on Monday, North Daviess on Wednesday and Orleans on Friday.
The only road trip is to South Knox on Tuesday, Apr. 16.
