I stand for the flag...
Because our heroes rest beneath it.
It’s a sentence you might find on a shirt, maybe a bumper sticker. But it’s one that always hits me hard when I hear it because for me, it’s the truth.
I’ve always been a patriotic gal. I was raised that way, and being born on the nation’s birthday certainly seems to add to that sense of connection and pride.
I understand the courage and sacrifice given to protect our nation as much as someone who has never served can, and I can only imagine the hardships and struggles that come with injuries both visible and not.
When I was in college, I was scouring the internet looking for internships and ways to gain experience in my field. Eventually I came across one, a ‘volunteership’ of sorts with a Texas-based nonprofit that helps vets get emergency funds for whatever they need. Food, rent, money for a ride somewhere, etc.
The team is spread out over the country and is made up of veterans or family members of those who have served, and my role is simply to spread awareness of the organization through social media.
Now, I’m not going to give a whole spiel here, but I will go so far as to name drop (Funds For Veterans) (insert winking face here).
I could never make it as one who put themselves on the line the way our servicemen and women do, but I can support them in my own way.
It may not be much, but it’s better than nothing. Our veterans have done so much, given even more, and I believe the least we can do, that I can do is to take my skills and try to make things just a little better.
I say say that pledge, sing that anthem, remember the bravery and sacrifice and don’t take a thing for granted.
