Wednesday Works
Hello everybody and happy Wednesday! When I asked the ladies here in the office what they thought I should write about on my blog, they gave me a hard answer: “Whatever you want”. So after thinking about it earlier this week, I came up with something that I want to try out. I thought about the different things that I like to talk about, and books and movies were the first things that came to mind. So I’m thinking that on every Wednesday, I will have a “Wednesday Works” blog where I can blog about different novels that I’ve read and sort of give a brief synopsis of the book and rate/recommend the book. Additionally, on Fridays I will have a “Friday Flicks” blog where I can write about movies that I’ve seen and rate/recommend them as well. You readers can even comment certain books and/or movies that you’d like for me to watch/read and I can give my honest opinions about them.
So for my first “Wednesday Works”, I’m going to start off with a book I first read back when I was 15-years-old. The book is titled “Of Mice and Men”, and when I first read this book, it took me a while to understand the realism and authenticity of the book. The book is about two migrant ranch workers, Lennie and George, who are good friends travel together to find work. It tells about how hard it is for the two to keep a job due to Lennie always finding a way to get into trouble. Lennie suffers from an intellectual disability, and George is always having to look after him and get Lennie out of trouble. The two finally find a ranch that could be a place the two could work at for awhile to earn enough money to buy their own land, though George must make sure that Lennie doesn’t find a way to ruin the opportunity for the both of them.
There are a lot of topics discussed in this book, such as racism, that are really hard to digest as the reader. It is also one of the books that has gotten a place on the “Banned Books” list put out by the American Library Association due to its content of foul language and the mistreatment of women in the book. Even though the story has hard content in it, the main focus of the story encompasses the “big-brother friendship” the two main characters have with each other and has moments that really tug at your heartstrings.
I would highly recommend this novel for anyone who is looking for a good read. Additionally, I would rate the book an 8/10, keeping in mind some of it’s hard content.
Thank you for joining me in my first “Wednesday Works”. If you would like to comment and recommend a book I should do for the next “Wednesday Works” or if you would like to comment a movie I should discuss for the “Friday Flicks”, please feel free to do so!
