Lyons Senior Center doing some good things
To the Editor:
A Grandmother's Touch
Nothing quite beats a home-cooked meal, especially from grandma or mom. And that is because they cooked with love.
While the ladies of the Lyons Senior Center may or may not be grandmothers or mothers, they cook with the same love and experience that your grandma or mom did. Perhaps that is why their food is so good. And I don't say that lightly, I am a very picky eater and as a rule would never eat any pies, cakes or the like not make by grandmother or great grandmother.
As such when I first got ahold of a carrot cake and a blueberry cobbler made by them I was skeptical at best. But on my grandma's advice I tried it anyway and it was excellent. So I just had to find out more, and after some inquiries I had the chance to sit down and talk with Kathy England, the Senior Center Director.
Over the course of our talk I learned many things. I learned that bake sales are held frequently. And in addition to that there is a breakfast held simultaneously, that they cook with the help of a local restaurant which is conveniently located nearby. I also learned that the proceeds go to a fund that aims to expand the Senior Center. Also that soon an account would be set up with a bank somewhere that allows people to donate directly if they feel inclined.
When asked if it was hard to organize and run a bake sale Ms. England replied "Not with my great team of people." And there must be something to it because on average they make around $400 per sale, proving that I'm not the only one who likes their cooking.
For more information call 659-2184. Ms. England said they are always looking for volunteers and recipes. So I volunteered a recipe for riceballs, a Japanese staple food the is very flexible. Who knows at the next bake sale on the 27th you might get to try it.
