Samuel William Bates

Samuel William Bates, 34, of Williams, passed away on August 11, 2023 at his home. Sam was born September 2, 1988 to Victoria L. (Ray) Bates and Gerald Bates and attended Bloomfield High School before enlisting in the U.S. Army National Guard. Whether he was fishing, boating, or trapping he could often be found with his son and father on the White River. He was also a knowledgeable Bible scholar and an avid Bible collector.

As a Specialist in the Army, Sam saw action in Operation Iraqi Freedom that left an indelible mark on him. He also served as a Military Police officer. Sam was a decorated soldier, receiving the Army Commendation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal. Sam was a devoted father and is survived by his young son, Lucas William Bates; mother, Victoria Bates; father, Gerald Bates; brother, Gerald Curtis Bates; extended family, Britian Weatherholt and Mavryck and Knoxdon VanHentenryck; and many loving aunts, uncles and cousins.

Sam was preceded in death by grandfathers Robert W. Ray and Curtis Bates; grandmothers Doris Ileene (Gillick) Baxter and Nina Mae (Peck) Bates; and sister Elizabeth Ileene Ray. A private funeral service will be held and interment with military honors will occur at Solsberry Cemetery.
