Jon F. “Sam” Vehslage, 72, passed away on April 5, 2024 at Greene County General Hospital.

Sam was born in Linton on April 1, 1952 to Robert F. and Betty J. (Havens) Vehslage. They couldn’t decide what his name should be, so they compromised by naming him Jon and giving him the nickname Sam, which most people knew him by.

He was preceded in death by his parents; younger sister, Julie A. Vehslage Hinton and step-son, Adam Hasler.

He is survived by his wife, Jackie Vehslage; daughter, Jennifer (Jarrod) Brett; son, Jeremy (Heather) Vehslage; step-sons, Joshua Hasler and Jacob Hasler; grandchildren, Lillian Vehslage, Logan Vehslage, Hunter Hasler, Charli Hasler and Kyleigh Hasler; sister, Jan (Bill) Minderman and several nieces and nephews.

Sam graduated from Worthington-Jefferson High School in 1969 and attended Vincennes University. He worked as a farmer, EMT and for the United States Postal Service.

Sam was an avid outdoorsman and firearms enthusiast. He loved to hunt and fish, read a good book or sit by the river and enjoy an ice cold beer. He loved his pets, frequently handing out “puppy treats” and teaching the cats to play fetch.

A celebration of life will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 14, 2024 at Welch & Cornett Funeral Home in Worthington.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in his memory to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation at diabetes.org, or if you prefer, sit outside on a nice day (with a cold beer) and think of him.

Online condolences may be shared with Sam’s family at www.welchcornett.com.
