When it Comes to Love You Don't Count the Cost
The above is a title of a song I heard the morning of September 28th, 1991, the day after my father's sudden death.
My mother was too ill to go, so I was in the bathroom trying to pull myself together to make the arrangements for my father's funeral.
Being alone behind a closed door I turned my eyes to God and asked " How could you do this to me? Cut a piece of my heart out by taking my father."
You see fathers are not supposed to die. Yes, I knew he was sick, but he always pulled through....I needed him and he was not supposed to ever die....but he did... and the pain was unbearable.
Finally my tears subsided and a song began playing on the radio.
As I started to listen it told of how when it comes to love you don't count the cost. A woman doesn't count the pain when she has a child because of the love of her baby, how a man who goes to war doesn't count the cost of possibly losing his life because of the love of his country and family, and if you ever doubted all you have to do is look at the cross.
In the stillness that followed quietly my God asked, "Do you still trust me?"
My answer was, "Of course, I still trust you, I put my life in your hands years ago."
"Well then you have your answer," was His reply.
You see we cannot count the cost of love. Yes, it hurts when we lose someone to death, or have our hearts broken in relationships, but without love our lives are safe from pain, but empty and not truly lived.
Jesus didn't count the cost of the cross, the pain, the suffering, the horrible death because of His and God's love and sacrifice provided for reconciliation of mankind to his creator.
We are made in His image and He has given us, his creation, so many of His qualities such as the desire to create, compassion, and most of all the ability to love.
We just can't count the cost. It is worth it every time.
