You might have missed a thing… or two
If you’ve seen me out and about in the last few months, I promise you’re not seeing double … just twins.
In February, our family of three quickly grew to a family of five when we welcomed our twin daughters Cora and Rowan to the world.
Since leaving my full-time role at the GCDW three years ago to pursue a work-from-home opportunity, we haven’t spent as much time out and about. About a month ago, I got brave and took all three of my girls to an event at the park and ran into one of my old newspaper contacts.
“Did I miss something?” she asked, pointing at my double stroller.
“Yeah… a couple of things!” I told her with a laugh.
It’s been almost exactly one year since we saw two heartbeats on that screen. Let me tell ya, it was the shock of a lifetime. I had been struggling with infertility issues for three years when we finally got our positive pregnancy test. The day of my first ultrasound, I took my sister with me since my husband couldn’t get away from work. I’ll never forget that moment because it still makes me laugh. All I could think was that I wanted to hear a strong heartbeat so I knew that my little peanut was healthy.
The technician was quiet for a few minutes and I was staring up at the ceiling tiles because she had the screen slightly turned away from me. Then, she said, “SUPRISE, THERE’S TWO!”
My sister had been sitting quietly in the corner, anxious herself because of how long the technician was taking. But when the lady said there were two, Crystal jumped out of her seat and yelled, “I FREAKING TOLD YOU.” She definitely scared the poor woman, but if you happen to know my sister, you know that she’s hardly ever wrong on her wild suspicions.
Here I am literally having a panic attack laying on that bed and my sister is giving me “I told you so.” Typical!
I video-called Logan as soon as the appointment was over and I was crying hysterically. My sister finally had to tell him what was going on because I still couldn’t breathe.
These beautiful surprises that I will affectionately call my BOGO babies are five months old now. I didn’t know how we could handle two babies at once, but if you check out those big smiles, I think we are doing pretty darn good.
If you happen to remember my old column content, I used to write a lot about my daughter, Cici. She’s five now, and even cooler than ever. It has been so much fun watching her become a big sister. I didn’t think I could love her more than I already did, but seeing her big heart sharing all that love with her siblings is more than I could have ever asked for as a parent.
I told Cici a while back that a great way to help build their language abilities is to not use baby talk. We speak with the babies like little adults. So when the babies babble, Cici engages with their stories. Recently, Cora was gabbing for several minutes and Cici said, “Oh wow! There were dragons?” We still laugh about that.
Life is absolutely crazy, but my husband and I are the luckiest parents in the world. Even after a year of finding out we were welcoming double-trouble, sometimes it is still shocking. The other day, Logan walked into my home office and said, “Sabrina. We have two babies!”
