Embrace the unknown of spring sports
County teams are getting their spring sports seasons underway this weekend and it a season full of question marks. Here are the top three things to look out for.
3. Empty
2. Empty
1. Empty
Yep, very little is known right now about how the spring season will go. A large number of teams have new coaches with precious little in terms of returning starters.
The cancellation of the 2020 spring season due to COVID-19 makes it difficult to predict how 2021 will go. We have never seen anything like this before. Having an entire season wiped out in softball, baseball, track and field, girls tennis and boys golf is beyond abnormal.
As sports media members, we look at the previous season to forecast the following year. When there is no previous season people like myself are lost in the woods.
Current seniors were sophomores the last time these sports were played. Few of them were starters.
Talking to teams in the area you hear common themes. “We are young,” or “This is my second year as coach but technically my first season.”
Another common denominator would be the lack of seniors on these teams. Shakamak baseball is an exception but a few other teams have just one or two seniors on their rosters.
Spring sports will be rusty for a while and I will be included in that. Not covering softball and baseball in two years will make it a little tough for me the first month but I hope to find my groove in May.
Until then embrace the uncertainty this month as teams will look to figure out who they are.
