‘Don’t get divorced’ weekend
The most dangerous weekends on the calendar is upon us. The weekend prior to Christmas where NFL games are on Saturday in addition to Sunday.
A prominent sports media personality, Bill Simmons, once referred to the event as “Don’t get divorced weekend.” It’s where a husband/father should be helping the wife and kids get ready for Christmas but instead chooses to take in 12-19 hours of watching football.
I am confident that the National Football League has contributed to the high divorce rate our country has. Saturday NFL games are a problem folks. Heck, if you’re a Colts fan, their season comes down to a game against the Patriots Saturday night. That’s a night when your wife probably wants to go look at Christmas lights or do something with the family because it’s the last Saturday before Christmas. Add in college football bowl games and you have a perfect storm. Insert fantasy football playoffs into the mix (I have three leagues going) and now it’s a category five hurricane.
I know it’s hard. My wife will call me out for watching too many sports on the weekend. My counter that I watch less than what I did when I was single is not effective. In fact, it makes things worse.
This weekend is the most prominent example for sports fans of how much compromise is required in a marriage. Make your plans accordingly.
Just try not to get divorced this weekend. You still have two full weekends of NFL playoffs to get through a month later.
