Back home again in Indiana
Some of my earliest memories revolve around sports.
I remember reading a massive anthology covering the history of hockey almost every day growing up, soaking up every detail I could, from the origin of the sport all the way to modern day at that time around 2005.
The first time I remember thinking I wanted to cover sports for a career I was 15 or 16. My dad was talking about me to some family friends and said, “He’s going to be on ESPN some day.” Before that day I never even thought about sports journalism as a career; it almost felt like a cop-out since I loved watching and learning about sports. I thought, “No way can this actually be my career.” Flash forward eight years and here I am, in my second year as a sports editor.
At my core, I’m an Indiana kid. I grew up in New Castle with five siblings, two brothers and three sisters. We were all home-schooled, so there was never a dull moment.
I attended Hillsdale College where I graduated in 2022. That summer I moved to Georgia to take a job as a sports editor at The Clayton Tribune.
After so many years of wanting to be a sports journalist, working at The Tribune was the first time the rubber truly met the road and I got to experience all the joys and difficulties of covering sports. I fell in love with sports all over again. There’s no better feeling than being on the sidelines under the lights on Friday night or standing on the baseline while you see an athlete you cover finish off a fast break with a tomahawk dunk.
While I loved getting to live in Georgia and experience a different style of life, it was difficult being so far away from home.
But now I’m overjoyed to be back home again in Indiana and I can’t wait to get to know Greene County and all the teams and athletes here.
I have so many fond memories from my first year as a sports editor, from witnessing two state records broken on one catch, including a record that had stood for nearly 50 years; winning a second place award for my sports photography from the Georgia Press Association and all the amazing coaches and athletes I got to know over that year. I can’t wait to see what year two holds in store and I’m so glad to be spending it in Greene County. See you on the sidelines.
