You’ll Always Find Your Way Back Home
Growing up, I could always be found with one of two objects in my hand: a softball or a pencil.
I fell in love with poetry during my days in elementary school right here in Linton, practicing haikus and free verse any chance I could. English and reading quickly became my favorite subjects no matter the year in school. Over time, I delved into many forms of literature and a plethora of writing styles as I developed my love of grammar (and catching spelling mistakes).
My passion for softball led me to travel across the country, while providing me with some of my most memorable experiences.
From Colorado and Arizona to Texas and Georgia, the sport took me places I never imagined I would go. I graduated from Linton-Stockton High School in 2019 and, by a stroke of luck, was able to continue my softball career in college.
Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington-Normal became my “home away from home”. I immersed myself in a variety of subjects and courses whilst achieving my childhood dream of playing college softball. Plus, I met my lifelong best friends along the way (just as an added touch).
While in college, I was able to further my love of literature through several intensive writing courses. I loved writing papers regardless of the subject, but exercise science and sports psychology struck close to my heart. I chose to major in Health Promotion and Fitness Management in aims of entering a career in Occupational Therapy.
With this decision, I knew my passion for writing would still play a large role in my life regardless of my career path.
Moving to Illinois gave me a sense of independence, but my heart still remained with my family back home. Nonetheless, I fell in love with the sounds and sights of Chicago to the point I aspire to move there for graduate school (when the time comes). Authentic deep-dish pizza, art museums, White Sox games, and the breathtaking views of the city hold newfound significance to me.
My college experience has led me to a strong interest in health, fitness, and athletics. Even while being multiple hours away from home, I still enjoyed staying up-to-date with the accomplishments of members in my hometown via the Greene County Daily World.
Despite my love of Chicago, I knew a large part of my heart would always remain in Linton. I’m grateful for the path I’ve taken, and I’m excited it has led me back home.
I now have my Bachelors of Science and, you guessed it, am still following my love of writing. As a Linton native, it brings me immense pride to serve the community that shaped me. I’ve read stories in the Greene County Daily World since I was a young girl, and I’m honored to now be able to write some of my own.
