Some odds 'n ends ...
In this crazy world of bad news, how about some good news with your morning coffee, mid-day soft drink or after-work iced tea (or something stronger if it's been a bad day)?
* Business offering help
Three years ago Utilities District of Western Indiana REMC started a program offering their customers a chance to help others in our area.
So far, it has been extremely successful.
According to Jill Gilmore, manager of marketing and customer relations for UDWI REMC, approximately $15,000-$18,000 is awarded quarterly.
She noted that more than $200,000 has been awarded in the form of grants to community service organizations that make a difference in our communities.
The program is called Operation Round Up. UDWI REMC customers can donate their spare change to contribute to the worthwhile cause.
Operation Round Up works just like the name suggests, by rounding up your electric bill to the next whole dollar. The "spare change" is put into the UDWI Community Fund, and every three months the money is distributed in the form of grants.
The UDWI REMC Board of Trustees will meet March 29 to select the March recipients.
If you would like to submit an application for a grant, you can call the UDWI REMC office at 384-4446 or 1-800-489-7362.
This a great community service. Even if you're not an UDWI REMC customer, you can still donate.
It's always a great story to tell when community members help each other.
* Chamber takes positive approach
The 2008 Bloomfield Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors is focused on the positive aspects of its community.
The board has rededicated itself to promoting Bloomfield in a positive manner, and helping its members prosper.
It won't be easy, but I'm convinced this board will accomplish its goals.
I won't let the cat out of the bag as to some of the things the board has planned for 2008, but I know Bloomfield and the surrounding community will be impressed.
It's easy to be negative. There's way too much of that going around.
A huge pat on the back to the Bloomfield Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors for taking a positive approach.
The Bloomfield community will appreciate your work!
* Speaking of the Chamber ...
Cheryl Hamilton, executive director of the Linton-Stockton Chamber of Commerce, deserves a pat on the back as well.
Cheryl does so much to help promote Linton businesses I couldn't do her justice by trying to name everything.
And though her No. 1 responsibility is to promote Linton businesses, she also offers her support and efforts to Greene County projects as well.
She serves on many committees and attends seminars throughout the state. Why? Because she cares about her city and surrounding communities.
* Goose Pond photo contest
Attention amateur photographers: You can combine your spring nature walks and love of photography with a trip to Goose Pond.
The Friends of Goose Pond, a non-profit organization, is sponsoring a calendar photo contest featuring photos shot at Goose Pond Fish and Wildlife Area within the past two years.
For a complete list of contest rules and entry information, go to: www.clcinfo.org/greene_schedule.php.

Happy shooting!
* Clear those handicap spots
I received a telephone call from someone in the southeast part of Greene County earlier in the week.
The man told me he was handicapped, and has noticed too many people in Greene County parking in handicapped parking areas.
He offered a good suggestion on how to help police monitor those parking areas.
When he was in Michigan recently he received a ticket for not having his handicapped license plate on correctly. The ticket wasn't given by a law enforcement officer, but a member of a volunteer group.
The volunteer actually writes a ticket, but doesn't confront or give the ticket to the offender. They write the ticket, and then turn it over to the police. The ticket is then mailed to the offender.
The man said he was going to called Greene County Sheriff Terry Pierce and ask if something like that could be started in our county.
