(UPDATED 5 a.m. Tuesday) Ohio woman drowns on the way to a rural Greene County wedding.
(Local News ~ 06/20/11)
A 26-year-old Ohio woman drowned in a rural Greene County creek Saturday after her vehicle left the roadway as she was traveling to an afternoon wedding near a historic site, located northeast of Bloomfield. Abigail M. Scott, of Worthington, Ohio, was traveling to a wedding on the farm of Mike Gregg, which is located about two miles from the Tulip Trestle. Gregg's son, David, married Megan Gunder in an outdoor ceremony. Scott was a friend of the bride, however no one attending the wedding knew for sure Scott was planning to attend the ceremony, according to Gregg, who is an Indiana Conservation Officer. "She was a guest and they didn't know for sure that she was going to show up," Gregg said. "It was a terrible ending to a beautiful wedding." It was Gregg who later got the call to respond to the drowning after Scott's vehicle was discovered by fishermen. The victim apparently drove into Richland Creek south of the Gallimore Bridge sometime before 1 p.m. -- when the wedding was scheduled, according to Greene County Coroner Sherry Wilson. "It was a real tragedy," Wilson commented. "There were no signs of alcohol or anything suspicious. She just didn't know the road." Scott was pronounced dead at the scene about 7 p.m. by Wilson. Wilson said she believes Scott was unfamiliar with the rural road and lost control and drove her four-door sedan off the roadway and ended up in a field. "It appears Scott made several attempts to get her vehicle back onto the roadway, with no success," Greene County Sheriff's Department Det. Sgt. George Dallaire wrote in a report that was released to the Greene County Daily World. "Scott continued to drive through the field where she accidentally drove into Richland Creek. Scott's vehicle landed on its roof, with Scott trapped inside." The vehicle overturned in about 4 to 6 feet of water, according to Gregg. The car was found about six hours later at 6:18 p.m. by a man who was fishing -- just off of County Road 480 E, north of County Road 240N. Det. Dallaire said the fisherman saw the rear end of Scott's vehicle emerged from the water and called authorities. The suspect's body was found inside the vehicle. Dallaire also noted that there was no evidence that alcohol was involved in the accident. Also assisting at the scene: Greene County Ambulance Service, Indiana Department of Natural Resources Conservation Office, and the Bloomfield Police Department.
