UPDATED: NESC superintendent confirms board will talk about reorganization at Monday's meeting
(Local News ~ 11/07/13)
Superintendent Mark Baker confirmed reorganization of the Northeast School Corporation will be discussed during Monday's school board meeting. Baker said the board requested information on the corporation's schools to contribute to a discussion in their executive session as well as a presentation at the meeting Monday evening. "My job is to get the information they ask for to make the best decision they can," he said. "They'll have to make a decision on the information that was given." Baker said it is unknown what the decision will be or what the reorganization may look like but rumors are that the board will consider cutting Union High School in Dugger. "We'll have to wait until Monday to see," he said. The school board meeting will be Monday at 7 p.m. in the Hymera Elementary School gymnasium. Last year there were 172 students enrolled at Union High School and 169 students enrolled at Dugger Elementary. Union graduated 24 students in the class of 2013 and 19 in the class of 2012 -- the 14th smallest graduating class in the state of Indiana in 2012, according to the Indiana Department of Education. On Thursday afternoon there were 1,197 members of the Save UHS Facebook page and 149 signatures on a petitionbuzz.com petition to save the high school. Ron Booker of Dugger said closing the school could be detrimental to the town. "It's the one thing we have left that holds the town together," he said. "The main thing is what it does to the community when you lose a high school." Mike Padgett of Dugger, and a graduate of Union High School, said he can see both sides of the problem. "They way the times are going I don't know where the money is going to come from for the school," he said. But Padgett said the school board has been talking about shutting the school for years. "They've been talking about it since I was in school," he said. Coal Miner's Cafe and Pizza owner David Mauder said the high school is an anchor for the community. "It would be detrimental to the town," he said of closing the high school. Latasha Bohnert, who currently lives in Linton but grew up in Dugger and graduated from Union High School, said by shutting down the school the corporation will force students to choose between leaving the corporation to attend a closer school or drive a longer distance. "I just don't see it going well at all," she said. Troy Wolfe of Dugger, and also a graduate of Union High School, said he has mixed feelings about the potential of shutting down the high school. He said other schools may offer more opportunities to students but he enjoyed learning in a small school. "It was good coming from a close-knit, small school," he said. "I got a lot of personal attention." Wolfe said he hopes the school board considers everyone involved before making any decision. "I hope they look not only from the financial side but what's good for the kids as well," he said.
