May used to be a month full of 'the good old days'

To the Editor:

The month of May is a beautiful month. I call it the month of good memories. Nature wakes up and changes the colors from brown to green and a profusion of delightful colors. The air smells clean and sweet. The sounds of birds of various kinds make a symphony of pleasant sounds. The sunshine warms both body and spirit.

The special memories are "Mother's Day" and "Memorial Day." The good memories of "Mother" are so numerous the unpleasant memories have no room to clutter the beautiful life. The most important person in one's life is "Mother." Mother will love us, no matter what. We all have our special ways of honoring Mother. Most of us say it with flowers and or a card.

Memorial Day, or Decoration Day, if you're a geezer, was set aside to honor those who died in the war. It was a time to spruce up the gravesites and decorate them, with flowers and flags. Patriotism was important in the days of "America First." Since that time, the globalists have succeeded in diminishing our country through propaganda and infiltrating our halls of learning. They have promoted a worldwide commonwealth, dictated and controlled by the "elite." America is no longer what we used to be.

The Spirit of Memorial Day has been replaced by a car race, with much promotion and a lot of money being spent. I prefer the memories, where we would have picnics and cookouts and swimming at the State Forest Lake. It was a time of family get-togethers, where we enjoyed each others' company.

May was also a time for hiking, mushroom hunting, may apple root digging and skinny dipping in the strip mine pits. This activity was a lot of fun 'til the boys brought the girls along. Predictability, the inevitable happened. There was scandal. The Mining Co. then posted the land and fenced the entrance.

Sunday afternoons were spent at the ball diamond where various hometown teams played teams from neighboring towns. Those of us that had talent got to play and the rest were spectators. We had no TV or video games. Our recreation was outdoor activities, with plenty of exercise. There weren't may obese young people in those days. I also remember the dances, two or three nights a week. There were wedding dances during the week. Saturday night had a country music dance with band members from the surrounding counties. On Sunday night, the outdoor dance on a pavilion. Oh, the memories. We held our partners in our arms, when we danced. If our partner was a special one, we danced cheek to cheek. The band consisted of "wind" instruments and a percussion section. The Saturday night dance had the guitars, fiddles and banjo's. "Precious Memories."

Memorial Day also had a parade, featuring a marching band and a contingent of veterans, marching as a unit. It made cold chills run down the spine. Oh, for the good ole days.

Perhaps, we'll return again to the good old days and appreciate the month of May for what it really is!

Thanks for listening.
