Bertha Mae Richardson-Hawkins

Bertha Mae Richardson-Hawkins, age 83, of Dugger, passed away peacefully surrounded by family, at 9:27 a.m. on Tuesday, January 3, 2023, at her residence. She was born in the White Rose area in Greene-Sullivan State Forest on May 12, 1939, the daughter of Charles W. and B. Isabelle (Goodman) Kirk.

Bertha worked from the age of 13 as a waitress, during her husband’s time of service in a nut plant in Colo., at Gossard’s sewing girdles, at the Linton Thrift Dollar store, but most proud when she earned her broker’s license and worked at Key Associates in Sullivan for many years. She also worked as a residential and commercial appraiser. She enjoyed playing the piano, fishing and doing home renovation projects. She was a member of the Dugger First Christian Church where she formerly sang in the choir. She was a former member of Triad and during her youth was a rainbow girl and attended the Pythian Sisters with her grandmother.

She is survived by two sons, Wes (Peggy) Richardson of Bradenton, Fla. and Kirk E. (Rhonda) Richardson of Silver Creek, N.Y.; a daughter, Jennifer (Nick) Folkening of Dugger; a brother, Ralph Kirk; and grandchildren, Matthew Richardson, Colin Richardson, Michelle Pflueger, AJ Folkening and Lily Folkening.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Charles “Pete” Richardson; second husband, Gene Hawkins; a granddaughter, Shanna Richardson; a brother, James Odell; and a sister, Alice Marshall.

Funeral service will be held at Dugger First Christian Church at 1 p.m. on Friday, January 6, 2023, with Jerry Carmichael officiating. Burial will follow at Dugger Cemetery.

Visitation will be held at Welch & Cornett Funeral Home in Linton on Thursday from 5-7 p.m., and at the church on Friday from 11 a.m. until the time of service.
