Jerry William Deckard passed away surrounded by family on Thursday, March 9, 2023 at IU Health Bloomington at the age of 74.

Jerry was born in Bloomington on February 10, 1949, son to the late Otis F. and Flora P. (Wilson) Deckard. After completing his education in local schools, Jerry proudly served his country in the U.S. Army in Vietnam. He was a farmer, a collector, a fabricator and an independent thinker. He loved to attend auctions and could build anything he set his mind and his hands to. He was a fan of all motor sports, especially drag-racing and NASCAR. Jerry was also an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed playing poker whenever he could. He was an active member of the American Legion Post #18, Amvets Post #2000, VFW Post #604, and Moose Lodge #1081.

Jerry is survived by sons, John W. Deckard and his partner Peggy S. Newman and Christopher J. Deckard and his wife Pamela; grandchildren, Kaitlin M., Kamden M., Connor L., Bryre C., Braxton C., Jadyne J. and Chloey N. Deckard; brother, Joseph S. Deckard and wife Telena; sister, Sandra “Sue” Burch and her husband Jack; and former spouse, Joyce Deckard. He will also be remembered by his dog and friend, Smiley, and also his dog, Pepper, who has already passed. In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by brothers, Gene F. and James M. Deckard; sisters, Shirley J. Eads, Sharon Casey and Stella Montgomery; and brother-in-law, Dwight Eads.

A visitation will be held at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard on Friday, March 17 from 4-8 p.m.. A second period of visitation will be held at The Funeral Chapel on Saturday, March 18 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., followed immediately by a funeral service at 12 p.m.. Committal with military honors will take place at Clear Creek Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Legion Post #18, Amvets Post #2000, or VFW Post #604.
