County residents urged to be cautious tonight, Wednesday morning

Greene County residents are urged to use caution regarding predicted weather patterns expected in the area tonight and into Wednesday.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a hazardous weather outlook for central and southern Indiana through next Monday.

NWS predicts isolated thunderstorms with hail Tuesday evening with increased thunderstorm activity, including severe thunderstorms, into Wednesday.

Damaging winds are the main threat, and tornadoes are a possibility, as well as large hail. NWS also warns of strong winds gusting to 45 mph tonight into Wednesday.

“Use caution, and have a plan in place in case you need to leave quickly to take shelter,” said Greene County Emergency Management Agency Director Roger Axe. “From 6 p.m. Tuesday through noon on Wednesday, residents should be on alert.”

Axe advised planning ahead, charging electronics and preparing quick, easy meals in advance.

“If you have to leave your home or take shelter elsewhere, you don’t want to leave any appliances running or anything powered by gas on. In the event of a damaging storm, gas lines can be ruptured, leading to a possible explosion.” Axe advised preparing a “go bag” for yourself and your family, packing water, flashlights, batteries, and medications you regularly take and other emergency supplies.

“It would be great if nothing happens,” Axe said. “But if it should happen, it’s better to be prepared.”
