Steven W. George

Thursday, September 7, 2023

Steven W. George, age 71, of Switz City, finally won his lottery after his courageous battle with cancer on Sunday, September 3, 2023 and now walks the streets of gold alongside Jesus.

Steve was born on June 23, 1952, to Wayne and Francis George in Bloomington. He was one of seven children.

When Steve was 18, he miraculously survived an automobile accident. That tragic night left him with an inspiring testimony. He loved to share his faith and belief with others, especially with doctors and nurses who would care for him during hospital stays.

It was only a few short months after his accident that he would meet the love of his life, Rita. In 1971, he won her heart, then she became his wife, and they would start building their love story of nearly 52 years. After a couple of years of establishing their life in Indiana, he moved his family to New Mexico to pursue a career in the oil fields. After 17 years, Indiana would once again become home.

Steve was known as a jack of all trades and a master of none. A highly sought out mechanic, carpenter, plumber and electrician, you would always find him helping friends and family with all their needs. When he was not doing that, you might find him walking or riding his bike to Worthington or Linton to satisfy his ADHD jitters. Along his journey, he would find some of his most prized possessions. He also loved to volunteer at the Sonshine Shop. Steve was also a self-proclaimed comedian, sometimes telling inappropriate jokes, but always having the ability to make you laugh. His passion for helping others earned him lifelong friendships and knowledge to pass on to his children and grandchildren.

Steve’s true calling didn’t come until he became a papaw. You would see him cheering on his grandkids at all sporting events. Watching them play basketball was his favorite, and he looked forward to seeing his great-grandkids play one day. He loved to teach skilled trades to his grandsons, showing them what hard work and determination will earn you in life. He played chauffeur on many family trips and loved taking the grandkids to Holiday World where he could act like a big kid himself.

Those left to cherish his memory and collected treasures are his wife Rita; three daughters, Melissa “Missy” (Troy) Jeffers of Farmington, N.M., Candace (Casey Robbins) George of Freelandville and Amanda (Shannon) Hale of Worthington; one son, Steven George of Terre Haute; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; and finally, his cherished 1971 VW Dune Buggy.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant grandson, William George; brother, William “Billy” George; and sister, Diana Roberts.

The family would like to take this opportunity to thank the Oncology Center at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes and Via Quest Hospice for their care and compassion throughout his cancer journey. He remained positive, determined and strong until he was called home.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Worthington Park on Sunday, September 10, 2023 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m..

Private graveside services will be observed by the family.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Welch & Cornett Funeral Home in Linton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Online condolences may be shared with Steve’s family at www.welchcornett.com.
