On the precipice of another firearms deer season
Posted Friday, November 17, 2017, at 3:56 PMOnce again deer firearms season is upon us. For those who haven’t already tagged their buck during archery season, firearms season brings a new hope of success in the field. An annual rite of passage marking the advancing days of fall and approaching bitterness of winter. For others, firearms season brings another anticipated annual event: Deer Camp... -
Looking for a friend named Josh
Posted Friday, March 17, 2017, at 9:10 PMJoshua: According to some translations the name Joshua means God is generous. In my particular case, God certainly has been generous... with Josh’s. It all started innocently enough when I was five years old. My sister gave birth to my nephew, Josh Pickett. ... -
Its all about the smiles
Posted Friday, January 20, 2017, at 6:06 PMSocial media gets a bad rap. Often, we hear news reports of crimes and bullying conducted through social media’s various forms. Marriages have been broken and lives are affected. Recently, I was able to experience the flip side of social media. ... -
Ducks and rain = great times
Posted Friday, December 2, 2016, at 5:34 PMDuck hunting can be a hit or miss proposition. One day the birds are everywhere and you can seem to do no wrong. Then, the next day opens to empty skies and a figurative desert wasteland for waterfowl... -
A great hunting dog is a treasure indeed
Posted Thursday, October 6, 2016, at 6:35 PMAnyone who has hunted with dogs, be it pointers, hounds or retrievers can understand the statement laid out in the headline of this column. A great dog is more than a tool, a great dog is a companion. A barometer of successes and failures and a bragging point among friends... -
Its always an adventure on the river
Posted Friday, September 16, 2016, at 5:53 PMSummer isn’t complete for me until I have taken at least one float trip via canoe or kayak down the river. Whether a day trip or better yet an overnighter it doesn’t matter. So in line with tradition Buzzy, Ayrton and I went from Worthington to Newberry the last weekend of August... -
Make mine a double
Posted Thursday, June 2, 2016, at 5:48 PMTurkey season has come and gone, and I'm pleased to report that I managed to fill my tag again this year. Not only did I fill it, but I was able to do so a day earlier than last year. Truth be told, it shouldn't have taken as long as it did. Opening day I hunted with my friend, Buzzy. After hunting all morning without action we decided to try new areas. Our usual spot had a tornado pass directly overhead the night before, and we were certain that had the turkeys behaving oddly... -
Turkey season is once again upon us
Posted Monday, April 25, 2016, at 11:22 PMHere we are on the cusp of another spring turkey season in Indiana. Since the close of goose season, in February, I've been longing for a reason to get back outdoors. Ice fishing was nice, but short-lived. Mushrooms are delicious but I never seem to find many... -
A story of redemption: my path back to Christ
Posted Friday, February 19, 2016, at 8:58 PM6As a teenager I made a decision that I wanted nothing to do with organized religion or God. Taking the same path as many indignant youths, who think they know better than their parents, I was determined to find my own way. So, I put all the religious teachings and morals behind me and lived life as I saw fit... -
Beauregard the bunny chasing chow
Posted Thursday, January 28, 2016, at 10:23 PM2The year was 1994 and I was 14 years old. School was out for the summer and life was good. I would spend my days fishing the river with grandfather "Pap" and playing Mortal Kombat on my Sega Genesis. One day I was outside playing with my Labrador retriever, Duchess, when back by the woods I spotted a stray dog. ... -
Thoughts on a tough duck season and new friends
Posted Wednesday, December 30, 2015, at 9:42 PMWaterfowl hunting is, if anything, dependent on the weather. Without cold weather to the north freezing up the lakes and waterways the birds have no reason to migrate south. Living in Indiana, the land between flyways, we can only hope for some stray winds to push a significant number of birds into the area... -
Another first for Ayrton
Posted Saturday, December 12, 2015, at 12:11 AMAnother deer firearms season has come and gone. I never harvested a deer this season, but that's fine, my primary goal was to put Ayrton on his first deer. I can proudly say "Mission accomplished!" As always deer season started with my buddies showing up at my cabin throughout the afternoon and evening of the Friday before opening day. ... -
Good luck to area hunters on Saturday
Posted Friday, November 13, 2015, at 1:29 PMSaturday, November 14 marks an important date for many area hunters. It is the opening day for Indiana deer firearms season. For many hunters, this weekend represents the single best opportunity of the year to harvest the trophy buck that has been on their mind since the previous season. A chance, perhaps, to redeem a near miss from the year before... -
Heads up! Carp coming your way
Posted Saturday, October 17, 2015, at 12:15 AMAnyone who has been on the river in the past few years has probably experienced a peculiar phenomenon. Whenever disturbed large silvery fish begin hurling themselves from the water, some propelling themselves as high as seven feet above the surface. ... -
Ayrton's first squirrel hunt
Posted Saturday, September 12, 2015, at 12:44 AMAs a boy my first introduction to hunting was the pursuit of squirrels. I was nine years old and had just been gifted my first gun, a 20 gauge single shot shotgun. My grandfather had told me stories, for years, about some of the memorable hunts he had been a part of, hunts that made me long for the days I could join him. August 15, 1989 would be that date. Squirrel season has started on August 15 for as long as I can remember... -
Ill-fated camping trip
Posted Friday, August 14, 2015, at 5:45 PMWe just got back from vacation in Michigan. Namely north west Michigan in the Manistee/Traverse City area. This area is a sportsman's dream. With superfluous amounts of public access and an array of cold, clear streams and lakes it beckons to the core of my being. ... -
The country boy and the wanderer; My introduction to the outdoors
Posted Friday, August 7, 2015, at 9:49 AM1Last week I lost my uncle, Winford Swaby. Winford was known for many things, but what he was known for more than anything, was his love of fishing. Winford, or Frog as he was also known, would take annual trips into the Canadian north woods for backcountry fishing. In June of 1999 I graduated high school, and as a token of the accomplishment, Winford took me to Canada with him... -
There's a snake in my boat!
Posted Friday, July 31, 2015, at 10:40 AM1Few things in my life compare to catching crappie and bluegill in the spring. The weather is great, the fish are biting, and after a long winter I'm in desperate need of a respite. I wish I had more time for spring fishing, but with all there is to do in the spring opportunities are often too few. There are mushrooms to find, turkeys to be hunted, gardens to till and plant, and youth baseball games to attend... -
In pursuit of the Scourge of the Tundra
Posted Thursday, July 23, 2015, at 11:52 PMThey appeared out of the early morning haze, like a ghost carried on winter winds. The distinctive calls reached us from 500 yards across the Arkansas rice field. The sound of electronic callers, and windsock style decoys flapping in the stiff wind, called back to them. Laying, on my back, shielded from their view by a sarcophagus like layout blind, I shivered in anticipation of what was to come... -
To gig a frog (more accurately how not to)
Posted Friday, July 17, 2015, at 10:17 PMMy story this week will fall under the misadventure category. June 15 marked the opening of frog season, which unfortunately, fell on a Monday this year. Although Mondays are never an issue for me, with my outdoor lifestyle friendly work schedule, it was an issue for my 8-4 friend JB. So our first foray to the frog ponds would have to wait until five nights later, when our schedules coincided, on a Saturday night. A lot can change in five nights time!...
