On the precipice of another firearms deer season
Posted Friday, November 17, 2017, at 3:56 PM
Once again deer firearms season is upon us. For those who haven’t already tagged their buck during archery season, firearms season brings a new hope of success in the field. An annual rite of passage marking the advancing days of fall and approaching bitterness of winter. For others, firearms season brings another anticipated annual event: Deer Camp.
A time for experienced and novice hunters to come together and regale in past accomplishments or lament what could have been. A social event that bonds parents and children, bringing generations together over campfires and target practice. A place where tall tales grow with every passing year as memories grow foggier with age.
This year marks the tenth anniversary of deer camp being held at my cabin. Over the years, faces have come and faces have gone. The weather has ran the gamut of elements, from warm and sunny to wet and miserable. What made it worth the effort throughout it all has been the friends made with each passing year.
Some of the attendees have been friends of friends... later to grow into lasting friends themselves. A shared passion for the outdoors brought us all together. From the beginning there have been friends from out of town, people I may only see once a year. Yet, when the next year rolls around and they come to camp, it’s as if a day has never passed in absence.
Daniel and his father “Cheech” as well as a friend Trey have been regulars from Indianapolis from the very first deer camp. They have brought levity and shenanigans every time they come... as well as pulled pork sandwiches, a deer camp essential. Cory, a former co-worker, a transplant from Gary, Ind. made for an interesting first year member. Cory’s antics and enthusiasm (as well as occasional poor marksmanship) always made for laughs.
Anyone who knows me also knows I couldn’t have a camp without a Josh, so many Josh’s through the years. Travis and another Corey have come and gone through the seasons. Mike and Stan have slept through more pranks than anyone should ever be subjected to.
This year my youngest son, Ayrton will become a full fledged member of deer camp. His excitement is high, a young man who has watched from the distance at all of his heroes at camp. Opening morning will be for him. A chance to earn bragging rights among the other men. In his words he is “Excited for this weekend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
Deer camp has always been a favorite time of year, an event planned from year to year. Vacations are built around it. It’s part of what makes deer firearms season such a great experience.
To all the deer hunters out there, good luck this season and stay safe. I hope your season is fruitful and the memories unforgettable.
