BREAKING NEWS: Missing elderly woman found safe driving in Putnam County
(Local News ~ 05/23/12)
A 90-year-old Jasonville woman, who had been reported confused and missing by her family, is safe after the vehicle she was driving was pulled over in Putnam County on Wednesday morning. Iris R. Peavey, who had reportedly been driving around for hours trying to find her way back home, was pulled over at about 8 a.m. in Reelsville after an early morning call to 911, and more calls from a nearby convenience mart, reporting abnormal driving from a green-colored 2001 Mercury sedan. Peavey had been reported missing to the Greene County Sheriff's Department at 6:45 a.m. Lt. Bryan Woodall had taken the appropriate steps to have a Silver Alert declared by Indiana State Police, but it was canceled prior to being issued after notation came that the elderly driver had been located and she was safe, according to Greene County Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy Major Mike Hasler. According to an ISP release from Public Information Officer Sgt. Joe Watts, an early morning 911 call to the Putnam County E-911 Dispatch Center in Greencastle, along with calls to the Putnamville ISP Post from a nearby convenience mart, reported an erratic driver and ultimately led to safe return of the elderly woman. The erratic driver was reportedly observed westbound on U.S. 40 from U.S. 231. Putnam County Sheriff's Department Deputy Adam Hull spotted the vehicle westbound on U.S. 40 near County Road 625 W in Reelsville. As Deputy Hull was attempting to stop the vehicle, ISP Major Brad Scully was driving eastbound on U.S. 40 and saw the erratic driver was not immediately stopping. Major Scully turned around and pulled in behind Deputy Hull to assist. Moments later the vehicle stopped and the officers noticed the driver was an elderly female, who appeared very confused. Major Scully and Deputy Hull transported the female and her car to the nearby Putnamville Post where the staff of the post provided refreshments and comfort to Peavey until the arrival of her family. Major Hasler said the woman is believed to have left home in the family's car some time during the night. Police were called Wednesday morning after her husband discovered that she was missing. He said there were serious concerns among family members about her safety because she suffers from Alzheimer's Disease. Alzheimer's is a type of dementia that causes problems with memory, thinking and behavior. Hasler did say the woman was a licensed driver. "She just doesn't drive and the family usually drivers her," Hasler said. "Everything worked out this time. The family is relieved and they went to get her and bring the car back. It worked out and she's safe, that's what is important," Hasler added. Sgt. Watts concurred that this story has a happy ending. "Other than experiencing confusion and anxiety, Mrs. Peavey was otherwise OK," Sgt. Watts stated. "The 911 calls from motorists and attendants at the nearby convenience market, along with the officers being in the right place at the right time, surely concluded a dangerous situation for Mrs. Peavey."
