UPDATED: Eastern Greene loses at regional final
(High School Sports ~ 06/04/13)
HUNTINGBURG - The South Spencer Rebels just had too much offense and plenty of defense as they handed the Eastern Greene Thunderbirds a 12-2 loss in the championship game of the IHSAA Class 2A Southridge Baseball Regional at League Stadium Tuesday night. The Rebels pounded out eight hits and took advantage of two Eastern Greene miscues, but it was an early offensive explosion coupled with the Thunderbirds inability to get a timely hit that ultimately made the difference. "It just snowballed," EGHS coach Trevor McConnell said. "We had what seemed like a million baserunners left on and I think we had opportunities to capitalize and we just didn't do it." One glaring number from the Thunderbirds perspective came in noting the number of men left on base - 12 - as the South Spencer defense had an answer for almost every situation. Those included leaving the bases loaded twice to end an inning and another runner picked off third base with two out in a would-be bases juiced situation. "You've got to credit South Spencer," McConnell said. "We hit the ball hard a couple of times with the bases loaded and they made good defensive plays. "We knew going into tonight that they were a really solid team and a good program and that we would have to play flawless baseball to beat a team like that and obviously that didn't happen." The only time they failed to stop the usually dangerous Eastern Greene offense was in the first and second frames. That's when the T-Birds plated their only runs. In the first after back-to-back one out singles by Jake Johnson and Gage Shell, South Spencer starting pitcher Zeth Young was called for a balk with Johnson at third. The only other EGHS marker came in their next trip to the plate when a leadoff single by Nathan Sparks, a sacrifice by Keith Ringer and an RBI double by Kurtis Stille tallied the run. "We were just not sharp in any facet of our game," McConnell said. He noted that South Spencer likes to do their damage in waves and that's just about the best way to describe what they did to Thunderbird starter Stille. With No. 2 starter Carter Divine out of the question due to soreness in his throwing arm, McConnell turned to Stille. "Carter Divine is usually our No. 2 starter but his arm's been hurting him so he wasn't even available tonight," McConnell said. "We were trying to save Gage to see if he had a little in the tank and see if we could get to him at the end." Unfortunately he didn't appear to be able to settle in against the potent South Spencer offense. In just an inning and two-thirds he was touched for eight runs on six hits while fanning two and walking three. "I was scouting them and it seems like they're weapon is the big inning and it seems like they always put up a couple of crooked numbers," McConnell said. "That's what they do, they find that big inning and put pressure on you." The Rebels tagged him for three in the first and five in the second before Stille made way for senior Johnson who managed to stop the bleeding for the majority of his stint on the hill. He worked the 3 1/3 innings allowing just two runs on one hit with five strikeouts. He also walked two. "I want to credit Johnson, he came in there and did a great job," McConnell said. "When it didn't go well for Kurtis, I want to credit Johnson for coming and keeping us in the game for as long as we were. "It was 8-2, but with this team six runs down has not been a unreachable feat. I never felt like we were completely out of it. But you've got to credit South Spencer they've got a lot of tradition down there and offensively they made us make plays." With the exception of the sixth inning, when the game came to a halt because of the 10-run rule, Johnson kept his team in the ball game. He allowed just one base runner before South Spencer finally figured the lefty out. After a pair of free passes to open the frame, McConnell when to ace Shell who had pitched the Thunderbirds past Providence less than 24 hours earlier. But the wear and tear of a complete game performance appeared to have taken it's toll on Shell. He recorded just one out while walking two and giving up what would be the final hit of the night that scored the winning tally. The Thunderbirds finish their campaign with an 18-8 final tally. "It's disappointing as a competitor to feel like you didn't give them your best shot," McConnell said. "All in all this has been a great year and anytime you lose in the regional championship I don't think you can call it a disappointment." IHSAA Class 2A Southridge Regional At Huntingburg Eastern Greene 110 000 - 2 5 2 South Spencer 350 004 - 12 8 1 Game ended with one out in bottom of sixth Kurtis Stille, Jake Johnson (2), Gage Shell (6) and Carter Divine; Zeth Young, Trey Toler (3), Brandon Lehr (4) and Nathan Kuester. W -- Young. L -- Stille. Sv -- Lehr. 2B - Kurtis Stille (EG), Malin Webb (S), Ryan Duvall (S).
