(Local News ~ 11/10/11)
A rural Worthington man apparently fell asleep and lost control of his 2007 Hummer on Thursday morning and struck a tree head-on near the Greene-Sullivan County line. Darren Near, 39, was traveling south on County Road 1500W, north of State Road 54 at about 10:50 a.m. and went off the west side of the roadway, went up and embankment before striking a tree head-on. The vehicle overturned onto the driver's side before coming to rest blocking the roadway, facing southwest, according a report from Indiana State Police Master Trooper John Yung. Near told Trooper Yung he fell asleep. Both he and a passenger, 4-year-old Daylan T. Near, of rural Dugger, were taken to Sullivan County Community Hospital in Sullivan by private vehicle. Darren Near had a cut lower lip. Daylan Near complained of pain, according to the accident report. Damage to the vehicle was estimated by Trooper Yung to be between $10,000 and $20,000. Assisting at the scene were personnel from the Greene County Ambulance Service and the Linton City Fire Department.
